Mallozzi's History

Picture of Orlando Mallozzi

This site is dedicated to my father Orlando "Lonnie" Mallozzi, and my grandfather Ernesto Rosario Mallozzi. My grandfather left Minturno Italy and came to the United States in the early 1900's. He joined the US Navy and became an American citizen. After his tour in the Navy my grandfather went to Stamford CT to visit relatives. While on his visit he met Olympia Marucco and she later became his wife. After making Stamford his new home he started a wholesale fruit and vegetable company which he sold to the local merchants and in 1919 he started Mallozzi's Market, a retail grocery store where he had a large fruit and vegetable section. He would buy fruit by the train cars at the New York Terminals. My grandfather was a very giving person and started bringing his best fruit to friends and relatives in the hospital where they were recovering from surgery or having a baby. He would put the fruit in a box and dress it up with ribbons. Other people would see him and ask him if he could make something for their family or friends and bring it to the hospital or they would pick it up in the store. It went on to include Holidays, Anniversaries, Birthdays, etc. As his family grew (to 9 children), the fruit being delivered to hospitals and offices and homes grew also. After my dad served in the US Army in the Korean War, he came back to work in the store and started making fruit baskets and wrapping them up fancy and adding candy. After my grandfather died, my dad took over the store and when my brother and I were born he changed the name of the store to Mallozzi and Sons Gift Baskets. As time went on my dad mastered the art of hand sowing fruit. He could build a basket of fruit and make it stand buy itself with no tape or what they use today a shrink wrap, an art which very few knew how to do. We lost dad on December 2, 2003 and he was the greatest man I have ever known. He was a kind loving man that touched so many people with his good will. He is truly missed. Before he died we were working on getting his products online but his health was not good and now his sons, grandsons and granddaughter will carry the torch for him. Our traditional series will be made in a way that dad would have approved of. Although we can't ship hand sown fruit, we have the highest quality Grade A extra fancy export in our fruit baskets. I hope you enjoy our baskets and to all our customers we thank you, for without you we wouldn't be here since 1919. Above is a picture of my dad with his baskets in the Stamford Advocate. Always smiling, always laughing, we love you Dad.

The Baker

Bo Sundström, Swedish Award-Winning Chef

The Postcake’s success is the highlight of my more than 40-year baking career. It started as a fun idea initiated by the Swedish Postal Service and the Baker’s Association to celebrate the inauguration of its stamps showing traditional Swedish pastries. The nation’s "konditors" (bakers) were invited to create a recipe for a cake that tasted good, retained freshness, and was easy to send by mail. Among the 250 contestants my honey-glazed hazelnut cake was the winner. “Irresistible flavor, appealing aroma and just baked freshness,” were some of the judge’s observations. Since then we have mailed more than 200,000 Postcakes to 70 countries from our family-owned bakery in Sweden.

I have won numerous accolades for my creations and as a result of the Postcake’s success, I was recognized as a trendsetter in the art of baking. In addition to receiving the title Swedish Pastry Chef of the Year, my retail bakery was also honored with the Swedish Bakery of the Year award. My entrepreneurship was also recognized by the City Hall in my hometown with a special proclamation, and the Swedish small business magazine Du & Co honored me with their Swedish Innovator of the Year award in appreciation of “extraordinary creativity in the bakery industry.”

Five years ago we sold our retail bakery business to devote all our time to baking and delivering Postcakes, which has blossomed into a full-time journey. I share my passion for the Postcake with my wife and son who work beside me in our bakery in Sweden and we are very excited about our partnership with the U.S.-based Rossmoor Pastries to serve our American customers. I hope you’ll enjoy the Postcake as much as I enjoyed creating them.
